WHAT IS ARCHERY?
Archery is a sport involving shooting arrows with a bow, either at an inanimate target. This activity and the bow is one the most archaic activities and weapons of humankind know to be developed in the Upper Paleolithic. It was developed independently in different cultures and times and replaced the spear throwers as a projectile unit.
In the past, archery was used for hunting and warfare, but today it has become a popular sport, it is even in the Olympics too.
Archery has been around for many years. Some researchers say that people began practicing it as long as 15,000 years ago. The first bow and arrow ever created was probably used for hunting, and it was not until later on that archery was used in combat. Thousands of years ago, archery was practised in every country, except for Australia. Archery equipment has improved in its technology since its humble beginnings, but the sport remains essentially unchanged. Modern bows are made of a combination of wood, coated with carbon fibre, fibreglass or ceramic. The arrows consists of a carbon or aluminium shaft with a steel head, and can travel at speeds of around 149mph.
Competitive archery that involves archers aiming arrows at a target – has various forms, but all have the same aim: to shoot your arrows as close to the center of the target as possible. Scoring in archery is very simple, just add up the number of points based on where arrows hit the target. The highest score for a single arrow is 10 for hitting the inner gold ring, while the least is one point. Arrows missing the target altogether do not score at all.
It is classified into two areas: target and field.
